ATEX Pat-Jet Easy-Access filters

Pat-Jet Easy Access filters can also be designed in ATEX for explosive substances. Dust explosions are still a major hazard even with apparently harmless substances such as flour, powdered paint or metal dust. Pat-Jet filters from the compact type 2/25 to the very large 80/25 have been designed in ATEX for various processes.

The modular construction of Pat-Jet filters is also successfully used here, with special modifications to make the filter non-sparking and explosion-resistant. In filters where explosions are a hazard, it is often unavoidable that a part has to be specially designed, but thanks to our smart construction and exact calculation of the explosion it is possible to build an ATEX filter from approx. 80% modular parts in stock.

Antistatic filter cartridges and full earthing filter box

For ATEX applications, we always apply antistatic filter cartridges to prevent static charge build-up from causing a spark. The material of these filter cartridges is laced with conductive material to neutralise voltage build-up through the airflow. The other parts of the filter box are also electrically earthed so that no voltage can build up there either.

Spark-free fans

The fans are located after the filter cartridges and therefore almost always in clean air. However, it is possible that there is blow-through of filter cartridges, which means that internally they must at least comply with the standards for ATEX zone 22. This means that the fans are designed to be non-sparking, for instance by using brass, which does not cause sparks if it comes into contact with steel.

Pressure relief for explosion gases

The risk of an explosion can be minimised but never ruled out. If an explosion occurs, the overpressure must be discharged quickly to protect the filter, the surroundings and connected machinery. This can be done via a rupture disc which breaks open at a certain overpressure after which the hot gases have an escape point to a safe area, especially for filters located outside, this is an effective economic solution. An alternative is a flameless vent where the flame is extinguished and (apart from a safety zone around the vent) these gases can be discharged safely and flamelessly into a building.

Pressure-resistant filter boxes

During the explosion, a pressure increase will occur in the filter. This pressure depends on the explosiveness of the dust and the design of the pressure relief. During design, it is of course taken into account that the filter may deform slightly due to the pressure blast, but no parts will detach from the filter.

Determination of dust explosivity

To make sure the measures are correct, we are happy to help determine what the explosivity of the dust is. If it is a well-researched dust, we can determine what the kent numbers of that type of dust are with the help of an extensive database and our suppliers. If it is unknown then we also have the right contacts to carry out a certified trial in a laboratory to test the explosivity.

Total solution with explosion isolation

We also often supply the pipework along to a non-return valve that prevents the explosion from propagating to the prcoes. This keeps the overpressure and flames in the filter where they are safely relieved, and the rest of the process is safely isolated.
