Most common type of industrial fan: centrifugal fan

Most fans produced at Naaykens’ are centrifugal fans. These fans lend themselves well to many different industrial processes because of the good mix between pressure and flow rate, high efficiency and because these fans can withstand polluted air well.

These fans have a side opening through which the air is sucked into the impeller (the suction side), and a single outlet through which the air is blown out (the discharge nozzle).

For industrial applications, the versatility of centrifugal fans is why they are widely used. Especially in dusty production environments, these fans are appreciated because they can withstand dusty air well.

On our various fan pages, you can see the wide range of applications and various conditions Naaykens’ successfully designed and manufactured centrifugal fans for.

Centrifugal fans from large to small

As mentioned earlier, many different versions of centrifugal fans are available. There is also a lot of choice in terms of sizes, with flow rates from 500 to 250,000 m3/h and motor powers from 0.37 kW to 1000 kW. However, very large centrifugal fans are not common, in which case the application of multiple fans is usually chosen.

As an example of the different sizes, here are two examples of a large fan and a number of smaller fans. The large fan is for flue gas removal, and a number of smaller fans made of stainless steel for use in the petrochemical industry.

Here too, a number of different options are already clearly visible:

  • Versions with V-belts or directly driven;
  • Designs from (very) large to small;
  • ATEX versions (1, 2, 21 and 22);
  • Construction in stainless steel, and other high-quality materials such as Duplex or Nicrofer.

Fans with special materials

The above examples already show that we have extensive experience in manufacturing steel or stainless steel fans. But we also often work with other materials, to use the best material properties for each application.

Below is a selection of the different materials we use:

  • A PTFE coating for a food fan;
  • Fully hot-dipped galvanised fans for aggressive conditions;
  • Brass protective caps protective plates for spark-free fans;
  • Castolin impellers for wear-sensitive material transport such as glass or rock wool;
  • Different types of stainless steel for food products, among others.

Besides these materials, we also have experience with special coatings such as urethane, halar, epoxy, ceramic or rubber. We also regularly apply wear plates and wear coatings such as Castolin and Vautid.

Fans for material transport

A lesser-known application for fans is that the airflow can also be used well for transporting materials. By special design of the impeller, it is possible to use these fans to transport dust, fibres or even larger particles.

For example, the fans below are designed for conveying the processed parts of flax. Here it is especially easy to see how the construction of the impeller is different from a typical axial fan or an impeller with enclosed blades. These blades protrude on the suction side so that they can get well into the material without allowing it to accumulate.

For each type of material, a close look should be taken at how it behaves to avoid problems, as not every fan is suitable for dust transport or fibre transport. Accumulation or shedding of fibres is always a risk, and the desired result is of course that the material is transported. We will be happy to advise you on which impeller is best for your material transport via fans!

Transport fan glass wool

The fans below are used in the production of glass wool. Glass wool is usually made from recycled glass, which makes it very hard and abrasive. For these fans, we therefore opt for easy-to-disassemble impellers with wear strips that can be quickly replaced. Thus, for an existing impeller, the wear strips can be replaced several times before the entire impeller needs to be replaced.

The rightmost photo also shows well the wear after prolonged use of this impeller – here the wear is mostly limited to the wear strips.

Example of a recent project: large industrial fans for biogas aeration

We were able to supply a very nice fan for a valued customer with several biogas plants. Here we supplied a stainless steel fan that supplies air to an aeration plant, where air is supplied at high pressure to a fermenting biological slurry. The fan described here discharges flue gases from an incineration plant. This biogas plant is highly efficient and recovers most of the combustion energy, so the exhaust gases are only 30° C.

A frequency control allows this fan to run at exactly the right speed to achieve very high efficiency.

Anti-axial pressure vanes

When air is drawn in, a large negative pressure enters the impeller, which creates a reaction force on the impeller. As the air flows rapidly through the impeller, this creates an underpressure according to Bernoulli’s Law.

This pulls the impeller towards the suction, and these forces are then transferred to the bearings. The bearing blocks clamping the shaft are mainly designed for radial forces, and high axial forces greatly shorten the service life.

We have a clever solution for this: by placing vanes at the back of the impeller as well, an underpressure also forms here, which balances out the total pressure on the impeller. This underpressure is not created by flowing air, but by the anti-axial pressure vanes continuously pushing the air away, thus creating an underpressure. Less air in the same volume, according to the ideal gas law, naturally also creates an underpressure.

By using this kind of proven technology, Naaykens’ fans are known to last a very long time.

So, now you hopefully have a good idea of the wide range of fans Naaykens’ has proudly supplied!
