Industrial dust extractor

At many of our customers where residuals or waste are processed, there is significant dust generation. Depending on the residual streams being processed, there are unique challenges, for which the dedusting intallation must be properly designed.

Some of our customers are major players in the waste management industry. Each different type of waste at the waste disposal site enters a different stream; where these residual streams are reprocessed into high-quality materials. Processing these materials is often done in ways that release a lot of dust: think of sawing and grinding old product or tearing apart fabrics to recover the fibers.

Therefore, with our experience, we apply different methods to ensure reliable extraction, with the installation tailored to the type of dust. Consider:

  • When processing combustible material, for example wood or textile residues, the dust is often explosive.
    ATEX measures are then necessary;
  • Dust with strict emission standards – for example, fine glass dust from glass recycling plants;
  • Light substances to which the filter material should be matched -such as fine plastic debris.

The dedusting system will have to be adapted to these kinds of specific requirements.
This is where Naaykens Luchttechniek is an expert.

Example of a dedusting system for glass dust
The glass dust is separated by the cyclone specifically designed for this type of glass dust.

Cyclone for dedusting waste processing glass

We recently supplied one installation for a leading recycler of hollow and flat glass waste. Here a cyclone in combination with a post filter was chosen. The great advantage of a cyclone is that it lasts a long time without needing much maintenance. This cyclone is of course designed to the kent numbers of dust released. The robust outdoor design also ensures that this installation does not take up valuable space indoors.

Also part of the overall solution is the easily accessible large bin for collecting the dust.

Customer request: extraction for location waste processing glass

Another valued customer active in the waste processing of glass, among other things, came to us with the request to design a dedusting installation. In glass recycling, the current set-up with fans and cyclones proved increasingly inadequate to purify the glass particles from the air, as emission and environmental standards are becoming increasingly stringent. Personnel requirements also play a role in this: a pleasant working environment makes it easier to recruit employees.

For such problems, Naaykens has extensive experience in designing appropriate dedusting systems. Again, of course, not only the filter is designed, but the entire installation including piping from the existing industrial process. Here Naaykens naturally takes into account the required air velocities in the piping so that the piping is correctly dimensioned.

Dedusting plant in waste processing plant with fan next to filter

Given the space available and the size of the fan, a filter with a fan next to it was chosen. The advantage is that the fan is easily accessible. The air is of such a clean quality that it is again possible to blow it out into the factory hall. This saves a lot of heat loss, especially in the cold winter months.

Saving energy on gas bill: recirculation of warm air from industrial extraction

All warm air blown outside during the winter months is replaced by cold outside air – which, of course, must be warmed.

Rule of thumb: every cold winter day today costs €40-120 per 10,000 m3/h of extraction

Gas consumption per 10,000 m3/h extraction*. 5m3/h
Gas price 1-3 €/m³
Gas consumption in 8 hours of operation 40-120 € per day

In the Netherlands there are on average almost 35 days when it freezes – it is not difficult to calculate that this can easily mean thousands of euros in costs per year. For the customer in the above example with 40,000 m3/h, the difference on an annual basis could run into the tens of thousands of euros.

The total possible savings are, of course, very situation-dependent. We are happy to help you estimate what possible savings are.

Distribution valves for summer and winter mode

It is also possible to have the best of both worlds, drawing in fresh outside air in the summer and blowing back warm air in the winter. A combination is also possible, of course – where with a y-valve at different settings a combination of purified air returns and part goes outside.

Dedusting plants waste processing metal, fibrous substances and other materials

In addition to glass dust, Naaykens also provides installations for other sectors in waste treatment.

Above are some examples for supplied installations. First, a fan which is in the dusty airflow at a metal recycler. These metal particles cause rapid wear to the impeller. A special design was chosen where inspection and replacement of the impeller is an easy and simple job – so production can always continue.

In addition, supplied hose filters are of the Cobra-Jet type for recyclers of fibrous dust. Such hose filters are ideally suited for extracting dust that quickly forms a large clumped mass – think cellulose or cotton fibers.
